Steve Halliwell, UK Lubricant Manager at Rock Oil, explains how the company does much more than manufacture and supply oils for the motorcycle market.

When people mention Rock Oil, there seems to be a popular misconception that we only manufacture and supply oils for motorcycles. Whilst we do produce products for this market, we celebrate our 90th birthday next year, which will mark 90 years of supplying oils and lubricants across a variety of sectors, including automotive.

Rock Oil has vast automotive experience and boasts a rich history of motorsport involvement, including supporting the factory teams at Le Mans. In fact our new motorsport engine oils from the Carbon range are quickly gaining a formidable reputation. We believe that if you can manufacture a world beating motorcycle engine oil which endures RPMs of 18,000, has to deal with wet immersed clutches, has a higher temperature than most other engine oils and from a relatively tiny sump capacity, then manufacturing oils for cars, trucks and tractors should be relatively plain sailing.

Our involvement at the very highest level ensures that we are at the forefront of lubrication technology and with today’s modern engine oils coming under more and more arduous conditions (stop/start technology, smaller sump capacities, extended drain intervals and thinner viscosities, to name but four) they have to work harder than ever to ensure optimum performance and reliability.

In the modern automotive industry, there is a vast array of lubricants available to the mechanic, which can cause a large amount of confusion. How things have changed since my days as a young merchandising representative for Castrol, when just two to three grades of engine oil were available to the market and gondola ends were full of the stuff. Now we have a range of fifteen or more engine oils, and it’s even more tricky for the consumer to work out what grade of oil his/her car requires.

We do, however, believe we have a solution, which is the Rock Oil Lube selector. This can be found at www.rockoil.co.uk. Every one of Rock Oil’s engine oils either carries OE approval(s) or is approvable – which means that the garage or mechanic can have complete faith in the products selected for service. In a pretty much unregulated market, where it is easy for some oil blenders to create a product that may meet specification when new, Rock oil again goes one step further. We have a level of ‘performance reserve’ in each product, which basically means the oil stays in grade for longer. Using oils and lubricants recommended by Rock Oil will give the vehicles you service the lubricants required to run smoothly and efficiently whilst satisfying the latest emission and economy requirements.
