Causes of an illuminated MIL on a Mercedes

Autodata comes to the aid of a garage dealing with a Mercedes presenting with the engine malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) illuminated and various trouble codes stored in engine control module (ECM) fault memory.

The problem

“We are experiencing a problem with a 2014 Mercedes-Benz A180. The engine malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) is illuminated and there are various trouble codes stored in the engine control module (ECM) fault memory. We do not have much experience with this brand and we are reluctant to get too involved in repairing this car. Do you know of any possible repairs we could carry out to fix this car?”

Why was the ML illuminated on the Mercedes?

What does Autodata recommend?

Yes, there is one fault we know about that affects various Mercedes-Benz models with 270.910/270.920 engine codes. The fault is due to the engine wiring harness chafing through near the air filter assembly causing a short circuit. A specific engine wiring harness retaining clip is available from Mercedes- Benz parts department and is required to rectify this fault. Check the engine wiring harness for damage near the air filter assembly and repair as necessary. Ensure the wires are insulated individually and the engine wiring harness is wrapped in fabric tape. Secure the engine wiring harness using the retaining clip. Erase the stored trouble codes and carry out a road test to confirm the fault has been fixed.
