Top products for classic car maintenance

The team at Kalimex share top products that will keep a classic car motoring nicely and on the road for many more years.

Maintaining a classic car whether it’s an early veteran, a true classic like a Ferrari or a modern classic such as the 90s Ford Escort – requires more than just a passion for restoration. Looks aside, it’s key to pay close attention to vehicle health. This means using carefully selected fuel and oil additives that must not harm a classic engine, should keep the fuel system clean, protect engine parts and result in a longer engine life. Additives are essential too because for many classic cars, replacement parts are either available or just not viable.

JLM E10 fuel treatment

When using E5 or E10 petrol it’s crucial to maintain fuel quality in low mileage. This fuel treatment aims to provide ethanol corrosion protection. It also says to boost the fuel’s octane number and cleans contaminants, both big benefits when a classic car is driven infrequently or is in longer term storage.

JLM engine oil flush

This oil-based product cleans accumulated deposits, sludge, gum, and varnish from ages and dirty engines before an oil change. It aims to clean cylinder walls, pistons, rings, valves, lifters, and the upper cylinder area. Due to it cleaning the engine’s moving parts, engine noise is reduced with added protection to the engine and internal components, also improving fuel economy.

JLM stop smoke oil treatment

This aims to reduces exhaust smoke, engine wear and oil consumption and improves engine performance. Specifically developed for older engines with worn parts it can be used in petrol and diesel engines.

JLM oil stop leak

This stops and prevents oil leakages by reviving deteriorated seals – a common problem with older classics. Reviving the seals also reduces engine oil consumption. Suitable for petrol and diesel engines.

K-Seal permanent coolant leak repair

This is suitable for any water-cooled engine from veteran old crocks to modern day future classics and works very well on a Bugatti. This is what Alan Travis, proud owner of a rare 1913 Type 22 Bugatti had to say: “It had some porosity developing in the water jackets that cooled the cast steel cylinders. Since the Bugatti is hand cranked, we struggled with the first start each day. We had to deal with a half-ounce or so in two of the cylinders that seeped in overnight. We had to get this repaired quickly and permanently before the issue worsened and we had a hydro lock condition. There are virtually no original parts remaining for the earliest manufactured Bugattis. I chose K-Seal because I had good luck with sealing the porosity in the cast iron cylinders in my 1906 Darracq when we were touring Australia five years ago. Since our 1913 Bugatti is the oldest road going in North America and valuable, I wanted to use the best engineered sealant available. I did not want to use any product that contained water glass. After using K-Seal all hairline cracks were sealed”.

It’s worth adding too that K-Seal can save significant sums if the heater matrix or radiator springs a leak, or the head gasket fails.

Quiksteel epoxy putty

This can be used on leaking fuel tanks, bodywork, and wheel repairs. It is designed for rebuilding old components that cannot be replaced.
