An innovative charity fundraiser organised by two well-known Shropshire companies has raised £2,500 and enhanced the bowling reputation of one of their long-serving managers.
Morris Lubricants based in Shrewsbury, challenged suppliers to put forward players to ‘Beat Billy’ on the bowling green in return for £100 per match.
The Billy in question is Morris Lubricants’ purchasing manager Bill Moseley, who plays bowls three times a week for Unison, Shrewsbury in local leagues.
A dozen suppliers accepted the challenge and Bill managed to win all the matches, although he was given a scare when Jimmy Sleigh from Ironside Lubes, Stockport, a regular bowler who had lost only two league games all season, came within four shots of winning their match.
Bill thanked all the suppliers who had supported the fundraiser by either providing players for a challenge match or donations and Unison for hosting the matches. “I had great support from Morris Lubricants and the staff and it was a relaxing way to meet our suppliers in a social setting away from work,” he added.
Andrew Goddard, Morris Lubricants’ managing director, said: “It’s a fantastic achievement for Bill to remain unbeaten throughout his series of challenges. Having heard stories of his bowling prowess over the years, we never doubted for a minute that he would pass this test with flying colours and it was a lovely way to raise money for two excellent causes.”
Morris Lubricants and sister company Morris Leisure have raised £54,000 for charity over the last four years, including £10,000 in 2015 for the British Heart Foundation. This year’s adopted charities are Prostate Cancer UK and the Movement Centre at The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, Gobowen.
This year’s fundraising campaign will also see Morris Lubricants’ staff competing in the Macmillan Coracle Race in Shrewsbury on September 16.
