ClickMechanic conducts survey into key car checks

A survey conducted by ClickMechanic has revealed that more than 84% of UK motorists know how to carry out basic, key checks on their car.

The online car repair marketplace believes this will be vital, given the expected backlog of MOT tests following the extension granted during the Covid-19 lockdown, plus the added risk of disrepair as many cars were inactive for months. With restrictions easing and more people relying on their cars to commute to work or to travel for staycations, these basic but important checks can help keep vehicles running smoother for longer. Easily done at home, they can prevent more serious breakdowns in the future.

One of the most important things to check is the car battery and tyres, both of which can be the first to be affected after long periods of no activity, potentially compromising road safety. In fact, 84% of respondents knew how to check and charge their car battery externally, and 90% knew how to ensure that the tread depth of tyres is above the legal limit.

ClickMechanic’s research also revealed that:

  • 98% can check the oil level in their car
  • 97% can check tyre pressure and 86% can replace a wheel
  • 96% can check head lamps, reversing lights and signals
  • 90% can change the windshield wipers

Andrew Jervis, Co-Founder of ClickMechanic, said: “With lockdowns easing and more people using their cars to get to work or out for summer day trips, it’s good to see that most drivers in the UK know how to perform the basic but important car care checks for signs of wear and tear before getting back on the road. That’s particularly important after prolonged lockdowns when many cars were dormant. With many UK drivers taking up the offer of the MOT test extension, these actions can help with essential maintenance in between visits to the mechanic and save money further down the line for motorists.”
