Another 800,000 European vehicles could be caught up in the on-going Volkswagen emissions scandal, but this time they are not limited to diesel engines.
According to reports, “irregularities” have been found in carbon dioxide emissions levels, which could affect petrol cars as well.
Speculation suggests that these latest revelations could prove to be more serious for Volkswagen than the initial scandal.
A VW spokesperson has said that most of the affected vehicles are VW Polos and Golfs, but that Audi, Skoda and Seat cars could also be involved, in particular vehicles with “smaller engines”.
It’s all to do with how vehicles with 1.4 litre engines were certified to meet carbon dioxide emissions standards.
The earlier allegations related to NOx, whereas CO2 is a greenhouse gas which can cause lung disease.
The latest findings are to do with the way CO2 emissions and fuel consumption were measured during the technical approval for some models.
