The problem:
A 2017 Ford Transit Custom 2.0 diesel with a discharged battery was brought to us on a recovery vehicle. We carried out some basic tests which showed the battery to be at fault, so we renewed it. The vehicle was OK for a while, but has now returned to the workshop with the same fault. The customer also reported an intermittent noise from the auxiliary drive belt area which may or may not be related. Have you any ideas where to start to fix this car?

Yes, the symptoms you describe are known to affect Transit Custom models with 2.0 Diesel engine up to 05/19. The cause is likely to be failure of the alternator pulley one-way clutch. Fit a new alternator pulley one-way clutch and protective cap. To ensure the alternator is not damaged during replacement of the alternator pulley one-way clutch we recommend the use of a special tool, available from Ford (tool No.414- 009). Ensure the new alternator pulley one-way clutch protective cap is set flush with the outer edge of the alternator pulley. If necessary, charge the battery. Carry out road test to ensure the fault has been rectified.
