Mannol adopts Ester technology

Ester technology is delivering improved engine performance and economy for Mannol’s customers.


Traditionally restricted to the aerospace industry, Mannol development scientists have harnessed Ester technology and apply it economically to automotive oil and additive applications, offering a range of benefits to both workshops and motorists.

The aerospace industry has long been recognised as cutting edge when it comes to technological development and it was the first to fully utilise the benefits of Esters. These are fully synthetic group V base oils which are commonly used in aviation technologies to boost engine oil performance. The addition of V esters into an oil formulation enhances the functionality of the lubricant and provides the highest level of protection for engines at extreme loads and heat.

Drawing inspiration from the aviation industry, the Mannol research and development team have been able to identify the key to the balance of economically viable use of Ester technology and have formulated Ester-based oils that offer a huge step forward in terms of performance and longevity. The oil company has also created a range of Ester additives that effectively offer the benefits of Ester technology to the whole of the automotive aftermarket. This also means motorists can get the most out of their engines in terms of performance, economy and emission reduction.

Ester molecules are, due to their polarity, attracted to positively charged metal surfaces. This means that within the engine chamber they can effectively create a film on the moving parts. This in turn means better lubrication, improved combustion and lower energy consumption, which results in reduced emissions, and reduced engine wear. The molecules are also less volatile and so do not evaporate as quickly, meaning the oil will last longer. Ester also acts as a solvent and dispersant, clearing impurities that might otherwise form as sludge in the system.

One of the other benefits of Ester technology is that the molecules are plantbased, meaning the products are more eco-friendly, both in production and in recycling and disposal due to faster biodegradation.

The Mannol Ester additive range includes seven easy to use products, with engine additives and fuel additives for both petrol and diesel vehicles.

The most recent addition to the Ester additive range is Ceramo Ester Additive (MN9829). This is an anti-wear and anti-friction product that takes engine protection to a new level. It is based on synthetic compound esters and hexagonal boron nitride micro-particles and offers extreme pressure resistance, allowing the engine and transmission to operate at increased loads without negative consequences. It has excellent anti-wear and anti-friction properties which can also help to significantly increase the life of the engine and transmission unit, while also reducing fuel consumption, CO2 emissions and engine noise. The product is especially popular with tuning and high-performance car enthusiasts due to its excellent performance benefits.

The range

Mannol Ester Additive (MN9929) is an oil additive engine protection product, based on synthetic esters, suitable for all types of engines and oil. The magnetised ester molecules increase load capacity and reduce wear, thus extending the life of the engine and transmission components, saving fuel.

The additive also has anticorrosive and antioxidant properties and can prevent the build-up of dangerous sludge, which reduces performance and reliability.

Motor Life Extender (MN9943) is an engine protection lubrication system sealant, based on complex synthetic esters and is suitable for all engines and oils. It is specially designed to eliminate leaks caused by mechanical wear of engine parts by adding modifiers. It also penetrates and restores seals and will increase oil viscosity and reduce oil consumption, while offering increased protection and boosting fuel economy.

Mannol Benzin Ester Additive (MN9950) is a lubricating fuel additive for all types of petrol engines, including those with direct fuel injection into cylinders. This balanced package of additives meets the very latest engine requirements, boosting fuel quality and improving performance. It contains a friction modifier and an ignition promoter, which improves combustion and reduces the formation of carbon deposits in the combustion chamber. With regular use, engine performance improves and significant fuel savings of 2-5% are achievable.

For diesel engines there is Diesel Ester Additive (9930), which offers a similar level of protection and performance boosting properties and is especially effective in high pressure diesel injection systems.

Mannol Burning Booster (mn9939) is a fuel combustion activator for petrol engines, designed to reduce fuel consumption and protect the engine.

The advanced formulation of Catalytic Ester Additive (MN9202) can clean and improve the efficiency of catalytic converters without the need for expensive dismantling, while also optimising the operation of oxygen or lambda sensors. By increasing the combustion temperature of the engine and releasing active oxygen, it removes deposits from the entire exhaust system and optimises the composition of the fuel-air mixture, which in turn increases engine power and efficiency.
