Why was the Land Rover steering heavily?

Autodata helps a garage understand why their customer’s 2015 Land Rover Discovery was steering heavily and making noise when driving over uneven surfaces or manoeuvring.

The problem

“A customer of ours has noticed that their 2015 Land Rover Discovery’s steering is heavy and a noise, which may or may not be related, is heard when driving over uneven surfaces or when manoeuvring or parking.

The power steering hydraulic system has been checked for leaks and the PAS fluid level is OK. We have also checked the power steering pump operating pressure and this is within the specified range. Do you have any ideas what could be causing this fault?”

What does Autodata recommend?

Yes, the fault you have described has been reported to us before by other Land Rover Discovery owners. The fault is likely to be a corroded or seized steering column lower universal joint due to water ingress. To fix the fault, fit a new steering column lower shaft. Carry out some lock-to-lock manoeuvring to confirm the fault has been rectified.
