A visual guide to timing system problems

Belt drive makes noise shortly after installation of CT 908K1 kit (VW/Audi, Seat, Skoda 1.6/2.0 L 8V)

Problem

Shortly after installation of the kit, noise came from the cold engine (belt not aligning).

Cause

The timing belt rubs up against the inside flange of the tensioner pulley, producing a squeaking sound.

Remedy

Before moving the setting to the arrow marking, it is necessary to tension and relax the tensioner pulley five times. In addition, ensure the mounting surfaces of the tensioner and the engine are clean.

Failure of idler pulley due to overheating of cover layer – CT 1105 K1 (1.9-JTD Engines: Opel, Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Saab)

Problem

The belt drive fails due to the outer plastic of the idler bearing becoming overheated and melting. The back of the belt is also heat damaged.

Cause

The failure is caused by a blocked water pump. The belt slips over the blocked pulley, causing the back of the belt to become overheated; this heat is then transferred to the plastic idler pulley, causing it to melt. When the Idler melts the tension is lost and the belt drive fails.

Remedy

The water pump should be inspected regularly to ensure that it is in perfect condition. The pump should always be replaced at the same time as the belt.
