WD-40 Company and The Sun newspaper have announced a new team to take on the world’s best rally drivers in the iconic Welsh forests this year. The two household brands have joined forces to compete in the final round of the World Rally Championship, which will again be held in Wales, November 12th – 15th.
The WD-40 Company has agreed to sponsor The Sun’s Motoring Editor, Rob Gill, to compete in the four day rally event under the banner of the WD-40/Sun rally team. The new team will be competing against works teams and their drivers such as Kris Meeke, Sebastien Ogier, Elfyn Evans and Jari-Matti Latvala.
Rob will pilot the WD-40 Branded Ford Fiesta R5 rally car during the four day event in Wales. No stranger to the Welsh forests, Gill has previously competed in the event on numerous occasions, with the last attempt in 2007.
He said: “Wales Rally GB continues to be a favourite event for drivers and fans alike and the four day event is certainly a challenge. I can’t wait to get back behind the wheel and take on the world’s best in some of the UK’s most iconic rally stages.
“It’s great to be working with the iconic WD-40 brand as we have a great deal planned throughout the year for fans of the brand to get involved with the team themselves. It’s been a while since I last competed on Wales Rally GB, but we have a really great car lined up and support from some great sponsors, I can’t wait for November to come.”
David Whittome, Head of Marketing UK at WD-40 Company, said: “We are extremely delighted to be working with Rob Gill and The Sun on this project that will see us become part of a team that will take on one of the most challenging events on the world rally calendar.
“The WD-40 brand has long had an association with motorsport and Wales Rally GB is one of the pinnacle events of the year for British motorsport, so it made sense for us to join forces with Rob. We will be doing a number of exciting projects with the car during 2015 that we will be announcing in the coming months.
The distinctive WD-40/Sun R5 rally car was unveiled along with the team’s plans for the season at the recent Autosport International show.
PMM is thrilled to be named as a trade partner for this exciting initiative. Our involvement will see fantastic WD-40 tips, goodies and rally updates featured in future issues of the magazine. We’ll also be offering a very special competition prize in the lead up to the November event.
