Government Launches Counterfeit Vehicle Parts Awareness Campaign

The Intellectual Property Office (IPO) has issued new guidance as part of a cross-government and industry campaign to warn consumers of the serious dangers of fake car parts.


The campaign is the most extensive of its kind and looks at the effects of fake parts across the whole of the automotive industry. The guidance covers:

  • The dangers of fitting counterfeit parts in a vehicle
  • How to identify counterfeit car parts
  • Top tips to avoid, counterfeit car parts
  • Where you can get further advice and report sellers of counterfeit car parts
  • Counterfeits vehicle parts – think before you buy

The IGA worked with the IPO to specifically highlight the dangers of buying parts online and asking independent garages to fit them. We created a video explaining the problem in detail, which you can watch and share with your customers here:

We are also releasing a poster in collaboration with the IPO highlighting the safety risks of supplying parts for garages to fit, which we will be posting to your premises in the next couple of weeks. Please display this somewhere visible to your customers.
