Following the demise of the DVSA NTTA, technicians looking to become MOT testers have found it more difficult to achieve the qualifications they need to follow the right path.
So where can technicians go if they want to gain their Automotive Technician Accreditation (ATA) level 3 qualification?
Bosch has the solution for technicians. Having been accredited by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI), the company is introducing a training scheme to provide technicians with the skills they need, not only to pass their test but also to help them in their ongoing careers as MOT testers.
Of the 6,000 technicians a year that want to become MOT testers, 4,000 do not have the ATA level 3 qualification required.
With the DVSA no longer offering the NTTA, it has become even harder for technicians to gain the necessary pre-requisite qualifications. The IMI has turned to Bosch to help provide the necessary training that is required for technicians to pass the test and help close the gap.
The ATA Light Vehicle Inspection Technician (LVIN) level 3 qualification is known for its notoriously high failure rate, as supported by the Bosch pilot in 2015 where the failure rate was 86%.
Bosch has therefore developed a two-day training course at the Bosch Service Training Centre in Uxbridge and will cover six ATA modules, helping technicians to gain the necessary skills they will require for the assessment.
Following the training days, the technicians will undertake the ATA LVIN assessment. The assessment day includes both theory and practical assessments, whereas the DVSA assessment was purely theory.
Training will take place on the Monday and Tuesday with assessments booked in for later the same week. The training days each cost £185 (excluding VAT) and the one day assessment £350 (excluding VAT).
Bosch is offering technicians a 15% discount when they book the training and assessment as a package directly. The discount offer is available throughout 2016, to technicians who book their first ATA LVIN attempt with Bosch.

- 17 June – Light Vehicle Inspection ATA Assessment (1 day)
- 25 – 26 July – Light Vehicle Inspection Training (2 days)
- 27 July – Light Vehicle Inspection ATA Assessment (1 day)
- 28 July – Light Vehicle Inspection ATA Assessment (1 day)
- 29 July – Light Vehicle Inspection ATA Assessment (1 day)
