Why water separation is a vital part of modern diesel filters

The humble diesel filter is an increasingly crucial component for ensuring the correct maintenance and performance of a diesel engine vehicle.

It is a widely known fact that the percentage of water contained in modern fuel can be particularly harmful for common rail injectors, which work at high pressures. If the water present in the fuel is not properly filtered, it can quickly cause serious damage to the engine’s injection system.

When compared with the past, diesel now contains much greater levels of biodiesel – a fuel that comes from vegetable oil and can promote bacterial growth. This creates sludge, which is deposited in the tank (mainly) and is blocked by the filter, causing clogging. To avoid such issues occurring, diesel vehicles now rely on extremely innovative filtration solutions.

In conjunction with some VM R&D departments, UFI FILTERS has used its laboratories to create systems where the various functions (pre-filtering, paraffin retention, water separation and fine filtration) are performed in the same filter.

This filtration evolution has led to the development of an innovative new filter. Made of synthetic material, obtained through advanced technologies that allow the production of a deep filter element, the filter is characterised by a porosity gradient which allows the same cartridge to perform pre-filter and fine filtration functions. In this way the contaminants are selectively accumulated and filter life is subsequently prolonged.

The effect of depth, combined with the particular type of polymer used, enables the filter to achieve a ‘coalescence’ effect. This means that the dimension of the water particles is increased, thus facilitating better water separation.

What separates’ the good from the great?
Following intense R&D, UFI FILTERS has introduced a range of products – the H2O, Defender® 60.H2O (pictured, right) and ONE range – that boast a water-diesel separation capacity of more than 95%.

With a strong OES heritage, the UFI and SOFIMA brands offer two complete ranges of filtration products that are guaranteed by their original quality and are manufactured mainly in Europe.

UFI FILTERS has extended its innovative water-diesel separation range by adding a new product to its aftermarket ONE series. Applicable for Multijet engines, the component (pictured, left) can be identified with product codes UFI 24.ONE.0B.
