How To Reset Clutch Cables

TRW Aftermarket offer some tips to avoid damaging the auto clutch cable safety device.

Automatic clutch cables are equipped with a safety device to prevent unlocking of the adjustment mechanism of the cable. The safety device must not be released or removed until the cable has been installed in the vehicle. Sadly these safety devices are regularly damaged during transport or inadvertently removed before installation. In this case, the cable can’t be installed. The three examples in this article will explain how to mechanically reset the clutch cables to allow installation again, though some cables are supplied with installation information to prevent errors.

GCC3106 – Citreon Berlingo

Resetting the cable with the part number GCC3106 should be carried out from the pedal side. Firstly, push the inner cable into the outer cable, again all the way to the stop, until the protruding plastic sleeve engages audibly. Then the adjustment mechanism can be pushed together through the outer cable and therefore reset. Before installation, the inner cable has to be pushed through the outer cable from the clutch side. The cable fixed in this way (e.g. cable tie) can now be installed in the vehicle.

GCC102 – Citroen Berlingo & Peageot Partner

Resetting the cable with the part number GCC102 is relatively easy. Firstly, push the inner cable from the clutch side to the stop into the outer cable. Then pull the inner cable out again completely which puts the automatic adjuster into its starting position. Now the safety device can be locked and the cable can be installed.

GCC1783 – Seat Arosa & Cordoba

Resetting the cable with the part number GCC1783 is a little more complicated and it may require several attempts until the locking device engages – so don’t give up too easily!Firstly, push the adjustment unit together from the clutch side. It is important to create sufficient counter pressure on the pedal side. Then push the adjustment unit together from the pedal side. Once this has been successful, the mechanism has to be secured. This can be done by a second mechanic, using cable ties. The cable fixed in this way can now be installed in the vehicle.
