Tyre noise reduced with Falken’s new Silent Core technology

Falken Tyre has developed a new manufacturing process that reduces tyre-generated drive-by noise by up to ten decibels and cabin noise by up to four decibels.

Developed with its parent company Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI), the patented solution is called Silent Core.

Typically, the air inside a tyre cavity vibrates and resonates. These vibrations travel through the vehicle’s suspension and into the cabin, creating a droning sound.

The innovative Silent Core technology reduces these vibrations thanks to a ‘double-humped’ layer of ether-polyurethane foam, which is applied to the inside of the tyre carcass.

“Silent Core is a very simple yet extremely effective solution,” says Andreas Giese, Product Planning Manager at Falken Tyre.

“It’s undergoing a pilot testing phase with a well-known automotive manufacturer and we’ve received a significant amount of interest from other auto makers about this new technology, which is cheaper and easier to implement than electronic technologies.”
